The Community Citizen of the Year Awards celebrate our exceptional local heroes who inspire us all with their remarkable achievements. These role models challenge us to contribute to the betterment of our community. Their outstanding contributions span various fields such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sports, arts, the environment, social inclusion, and many other areas that enhance the well-being and advancement of our community.

The Esperance Citizen of the Year winners and nominees exemplify the spirit of community service and inspire us all to make a difference.
2025
Community - Lynn Kidd: for her work at Esperance Roo Haven and for protecting local wildlife.
Senior - Rod Taylor: for being an active community member in many roles, including his work for the Rotary Club of Esperance.
Group / Event - Esperance Fundraising Group: for their continued fundraising efforts, and presenting over $289,000 to the Esperance Hospital and St John’s Ambulance.
2024
Community - Trudy Pengilly: for her unwavering commitment to serving her local area through St John Ambulance.
Senior - George Starcevich: embodies the spirit of service of camaraderie, serving in the Royal Australian Navy, as a Shire Councillor and as the President of the Esperance RSL. George volunteers as a cook for Pink Lake Bush Fire Brigade and as a community broadcaster on Hope FM.
Youth - Hannah Lauritsen: dedicated, thoughtful, and inspiring young person to her peers and adult community members. She works hard to enrich her local community through the Goldfields Esperance Surf Life Saving Club, Esperance Scouts and the Esperance Music Festival.
Group / Event - Esperance Senior Citizen Centre: passionate volunteers with diverse interests, the Esperance Senior Citizen Centre offers a wide range of activities that challenge and engage its members. From dancing, singing, mah-jong, tai chi, and knitting to porcelain painting
2023
Community - Meredith Waters: empowers people by volunteering at Hope FM, as a presenter, trainer and manager. She is also involved with Death Café, Drum Beat with Healthy Rhythms, BOICO, and the Department of Health Advisory Committee.
Senior - Veronica ‘Click’ Lavars: worked in the field of social and community services for 40 years, both before and after retirement, Click works tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of our more vulnerable community members. Known to many as Aunty or Nana Click, she is recognised as someone that our First Nations people can turn to in times of hardship. Click is recognised by the homeless people in Esperance as a respected support, someone making a difference.
Youth - Dane Holdman: a valued member of the emergency services community, volunteering his time and energy to the Surf Life Saving Club, 6 Mile Hill Bush Fire Brigade and Esperance Fire & Rescue.
Group / Event - Esperance Care Services: provides an amazing service dedicated to empowering and equipping those in need, suffering hardship and struggling with situations beyond their control, changing their situations for the better through their Advocacy and Emergency Relief Programs.
