Wildcherry Dog Park

The Wildcherry Dog Park will provide a safer space for owners to exercise their dogs.

After extensive community consultation the 0.75ha fenced park will include lighting, for safer twilight walks, exercise equipment and watering areas. The site will be developed with trees for shade, be fenced and a vegetation buffer established between the dog park area and Wildcherry Avenue.

 Why is the Shire doing this?

The development of a fenced dog park was identified outside of the Shire of Esperance Public Open Space Strategy. The Shire of Esperance consulted with stakeholders and the community to finalise the location at Wildcherry Ave.

Dog Park Criteria and Details:

  • Dog Park Size (0.7-1 ha)
  • Two fenced areas, one for small dogs and one for all dogs. Minimum 1.6 m fence around perimeter and dividing dog areas. Dual gates between areas and exit and entry points.
  • Provision of dog exercise infrastructure such as logs, rocks, natural agility equipment, sand pit and dog watering points.
  • Provision of amenity infrastructure such as shelters, seating and bins.
  • Establishment of turf and potential irrigation infrastructure. Site earthworks and drainage.
  • Establishment of other landscaping features, plantings and shade/shelter trees.
  • Provision of other infrastructure services such as water and utilities.
  • Provision of access infrastructure such as carparks and footpaths.

Update 21 September 2022

  • Design has been received by H&H Architects (this can be viewed and downloaded above).
  • The construction of the park will be done in two stages:
  • Stage 1 - Landscaping & Establishments of services Oct-Nov 2022 - Landscaping will begin with contouring of the site and stolons from the oval and reserve turf renovation program will be planted to establish turf. During this time utility services such as water, power, irrigation and lighting will also be established.
  • Stage 2 - Fencing and landscaping. Installation of Infrastructure & Amenity Elements Jan-March 2023.
  • The development size of the Dog Park is approx. 0.75ha. The remaining Wilcherry Reserve area will be created into a parkland reserve, with grassed area and trees.
  • The park will open in May 2023 when all works are complete
  • Additional infrastructure may also be installed at a later date based on the use of the dog park.

Update 12 July 2022

  • Design is currently being undertaken by H&H Architects. Landscape architect will undertake a follow up site visit with shire staff the week after the school holidays to further define the final design.
  • Sand is being let to settle over winter.
  • When turf renovation program is done at the GSG, approx.. Sept, the stolon’s recovered from the renovation program will be planted to gain grass cover. The area will also be reshaped at the same time to establish undulations as per the design.
  • The final design will be workshopped with Council before being emailed to those who showed interest in the original consultation as well as advertising the design via social media for informal feedback.
