Advocacy All Round

Council voted at the October Council Meeting to submit feedback that will ultimately be provided to the State Government, advocating for cheaper, easier to understand Local Government (LG) election processes and less red tape.

Just as our Council and the Shire advocates for our community, the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) advocates for the LG industry. State Government’s 2023 electoral reforms saw changes to local government election processes, first experienced in the election of that year. After several subsequent requests, WALGA carried out a review and analysis of 5 LG election cycles. This was presented it to the WALGA State Council, who supported a review of WALGA’s position on LG election processes and called for feedback from the LG industry.

Councillor comment during the discussions around this Item were that the changes to LG elections added significant cost and complexity to the election process for no discernible benefit, and the feedback Council had agreed to submit advocates for a more simple election process, allowing an accurate expression of the electorate’s wishes, and Council stability and continuity of knowledge and relationships. The vote on the Item was supportive, and reflected a wish to deliver best value for our community.

Video recordings of live and past Council Meetings may be viewed on the Shire YouTube Channel, so if you can't make it to a Meeting you can still watch it in real time, or go back afterwards to see what happened.
