The Shire hosted a celebratory morning tea to mark 100 years of the CWA in Western Australia on 15 October, with many CWA members from our far-flung branches attending and Shire President Ron Chambers proud to celebrate their amazing work and far-reaching achievements. Read his speech below.
"Today, we gather to celebrate a milestone that holds great significance for our community and beyond—the 100th anniversary of the Country Women’s Association (CWA). And how fitting that we celebrate this centenary on October 15th, which is also the International Day of Rural Women. This day recognizes the invaluable contributions of women in rural areas, and what better representation of that spirit than the CWA and its legacy here in Esperance?
It all began back in 1938, right here in Esperance, when the first branch of the CWA was formed. From this humble beginning, other branches soon followed in Gibson, Munglinup, Condingup, Grass Patch, and Salmon Gums. Over the years, the CWA became a cornerstone of support, care, and community spirit for all of us, reflecting the strength and resilience that rural women embody.
In 2015, a second branch of the CWA was formed in Esperance, and from the outset, their dedication to the community was evident. During the devastating Scaddan fires, this branch joined forces with the Shire and, in just eight days, prepared 1,100 meals for the firefighters working tirelessly to keep our community safe. This example of selflessness and compassion is at the heart of what makes the CWA so special.
Beyond emergency response, this branch also dedicates time to a monthly initiative that ensures no child goes hungry. They make and deliver sandwiches to local schools, and in 2023 alone, this effort amounted to approx 11,000 sandwiches. This work ensures that our children have the nourishment they need to focus and thrive in their studies, exemplifying the CWA’s commitment to the wellbeing of the next generation.
The CWA’s contributions don’t end there. They assemble crisis bags for Lachie’s House and Esperance Care Services, providing much-needed support to those in challenging circumstances. They visit the Esperance aged care facility once a month, offering companionship to residents who cherish their warmth and presence. These simple acts of kindness make a world of difference to those they reach, embodying the CWA’s ethos of caring for others.
Meanwhile, the original Esperance branch has been maintaining the CWA building in the centre of town. This space not only supports CWA activities but also provides an affordable venue for local gatherings and small organisations, fostering connection and cooperation within our community. Their commitment to preserving this space has created a lasting legacy that benefits us all.
Education is a value close to the heart of the CWA, with each branch supporting local schools through book prizes and fundraising efforts. By investing in the education of our youth, the CWA ensures that their impact reaches far into the future, nurturing the minds and dreams of our young people.
So today, we celebrate not just 100 years of history, but 100 years of kindness, resilience, and community spirit. Thank you to all the women of the CWA, past and present, for everything you have done for our community. Your dedication and service are a testament to the power of rural women and the positive change that can be achieved when we come together with a shared purpose.
Here’s to another 100 years of the CWA—may it continue to grow, inspire, and support the Esperance community and beyond."
