Independent mould testing at the Esperance Indoor Stadium was carried out in June under the instruction of the Shire’s insurers. Results from this testing has just come back, and indicate high levels of mould in Court 3, meaning it is not currently safe for public use. There were also elevated mould counts in Court 4. As reported in previous updates, extensive water damage to Courts 1 and 2 meant they could not be saved and they have already been removed.
Further test results to identify the mould species are expected soon. These will identify the exact mould present in the sports flooring, its potential health risks, and whether it is a specific mould that damages wood. These test results will clarify our next steps forward; once received the Shire will work with our insurer to repair the damage and once again provide our community with a safe Stadium for sporting and other uses.
The Shire’s tender for the replacement of the Stadium sports flooring is currently open for submissions (details available here), with multiple options to cover the potential for replacement of Courts 3 and/or 4. We look forward to awarding this tender as quickly as possible after it closes on Thursday 18th July.
At this stage the Stadium is closed for the rest of July. The Shire is working closely with all Stadium user groups and stakeholders to manage this situation. We really appreciate their hard work and understanding. Further updates will be provided once the mould species has been identified, and our insurer and contracted specialists have advised on the best course of action.
