Council’s commitment to community was demonstrated once again with their support of the Esperance Hockey Association’s bid for $643,176 in state government funding at the September Council Meeting. The Hockey Association are applying for a Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) grant to begin their Synthetic Turf and Lighting Project, requiring the application to have local government backing.

Councillors wholeheartedly provided this, giving the Project a top priority ranking, and declaring the application to be well worthy of support; with all state, international and even regional hockey competitions played on synthetic surfaces, Esperance is well overdue for this facility. When considering that the synthetic playing surface will modernise local competition, bring Esperance players in-line with the rest of the state, and improve the development of junior and senior members, Council also guaranteed $300,000 towards the project, to come out of the 2025/2026 Budget. To reduce the overall cost of the project the Shire has also quoted for the earthworks, civil and fencing components.

The CSRFF application will be considered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, and applicants are expected to be notified of the outcome by early next year. With experience in applying for this grant already under their belt, it is sincerely hoped the Hockey Association’s experience will result in success, and a suitable playing surface for the last major Hockey Association in the state without this facility will be constructed.
