BUSH FIRES ACT 1954
PART Ill PREVENTION OF BUSH FIRES
SECTION 18 - COMMENCEMENT OF RESTRICTED BURNING TIME
(URBAN-RURAL ZONE)


Pursuant to Section 18 Bush Fires Act 1954 the Shire of Esperance advises Restricted Burning Times will commence Tuesday, 1 April 2025 for the following zone;


URBAN-RURAL ZONE -Includes fire zone: Urban-Rural (Esperance & surrounding rural residential areas)


Landowner/Occupiers within the Urban-Rural zone MUST obtain a permit to burn from their nearest Fire Control Officer prior to any hazard reduction activities.

The Chief Bush Fire Control Officer, Mr Phil Longmire has exercised his powers to restrict the issuing of fire permits to the following criteria;

  • Permits will not be issued for the burning of Tree piles; and,
  • Permit to Burn can be issued for a maximum period of 4-calendar days; and,
  • Minimum of 400It of water to be on site during the burn; and,
  • Except for Agricultural purposes, burning can only occur after 1500hrs and must be completely extinguished by 2359hrs the same day; and,
  • Permit Holders must adhere to all other conditions prescribed by the issuing Fire Control Officer; and
  • Permit holders must log their burns with the DFES Communications Centre Ph: 1800 198 140 (Free call) prior to igniting.

All permits are be deemed invalid when the Fire Danger Rating reaches 'HIGH' or above. The permit holder is responsible for checking the Bureau of Meteorology website for the day’s fire danger rating before burning.

Permit Holders are reminded not to light any fire, if you are not prepared to be responsible for it. Failure to comply with the above conditions may result in a $250.00 infringement under r15B(1) Bush Fires Regulations 1954. If a fire escapes the permitted conditions, the Shire reserves the right to recoup costs up to $10,000.00 under s18(71) BushFires Act 1954.

Please note: Fire Control Officers reserve the right to inspect the burn area prior to issuing a permit, refuse to issue a permit based on the level of preparation, direct a permit holder to extinguish fire if it is deemed unsafe, and suspend or cancel permits based upon local conditions or forecast weather conditions.
