The Esperance community turned out for the 2025 Annual Electors Meeting at the Civic Centre on Tuesday night and had their voices heard, with 58 community members in attendance, five Motions raised from the floor during Public Question Time, and three questions asked and responded to.
WA is the only state that requires local government Annual Electors Meetings, to approve Annual Reports and provide an additional opportunity for members of the public to ask Elected Members and Shire decision makers about the topics important to them. Along with the ability to attend Council Meetings and Agenda Briefings, Electors Meetings are a chance to see democracy in action, take part in local government processes, raise awareness of important issues, and drive positive change.
Once the Minutes of the 2024 Electors Meeting were confirmed at Tuesday’s Meeting, and the 2023/2024 Annual Report had been received by general vote, the floor was opened for Public Question Time. Questions were asked about the planned artificial reef at the Esperance Jetty, the Shire’s role around the State Government’s South Coast Marine Park, and a recent ABC article on pink lakes in the Esperance region, with detailed answers provided by the Acting Shire President and the Acting CEO.
Of the five Motions raised from the floor, four were carried by the attending community members. These are:
- That Council commit to a landscaping plan with capital investment for the Esperance Cemetery.
- That Council;
- Publicly oppose the South Coast Marine Park
- An independent investigation into the community consultation process.
- That Council:
- consider putting ablution facilities similar to Observatory Beach at Eleven Mile Beach and;
- investigate putting bins at popular beach locations along Twilight Beach Road through to Eleven Mile Beach.
- That Council join the of section of Keenan’s Road South to Keenans Road North.
-
These four Motions will now be considered by Council at the February Council Meeting, scheduled for 4pm, Tuesday 25 February in the Council Chambers.
As with all Council Meetings and Agenda Briefings, members of the public are most welcome to attend; the Agenda for the February Council Meeting will be available here, closer to the date.
